Renting a Boat Vs. Chartering a Boat

Renting a Boat Vs. Chartering a Boat

Technically speaking, renting and chartering a boat are the same. They both involve making a payment to someone for the temporary use of their vessel. But practically speaking, different boating experiences are referred to by these two terms. Here’s everything you need to know.

Boat Rentals

Boats that are advertised as rentals are usually smaller boats or personal watercrafts, such as fast motor boats, inflatable powerboats, and small plastic boats. Normally, these boats are available for rent from one hour to an entire day.

When you rent a boat, you get the boat and become its captain. You get to create your own experience and form your own crew. You also need to bring your own equipment to ensure the trip goes smoothly: water sports equipment, fishing gears, meals, beverages, etc.

Boat Charters

In most cases, charter boats are bigger motor yachts or sailing boats with provisions that allow for longer and more comfortable stays, like for a week or more. The three most common types of charters are bareboat, crewed, and cabin charter.

The bareboat sailing charter is the most common type of charter. It is similar to boat rentals in that the agreement doesn’t come with a crew or provisions. Being a charterer means that you gain possession and full control of the boat, and have the legal and financial responsibility for it. You will also have to cover fuel, crew, and all other operating expenses. Majority of charter companies require a valid skipper license which proves you are qualified to charter and operate the vessel you want. Moreover, when bareboat chartering, you are required to provision the vessel. This means you are responsible for buying the snacks, meals, refreshments, and other items you’ll need for the trip. You will also need to gather your boat crew. And as a captain, you get to make decisions about anything concerning the boat.

The cabin charter is an easy and cost-effective way to experience sailing. It is a crewed charter in which you will be under the professional supervision of a qualified captain who’ll operate the boat, provision it for essential items, and perform all necessary operations on the vessel. You pay for a cabin, share the boat with others, and get to meet new people – all while being pampered and cared for by a professional crew.

The crewed charter is a type of charter that may consist of a captain only or a captain and boat staff, such as a chef, cook or hostess. The captain is the one responsible for everything that happens on your trip, allowing you to focus on enjoying your vacation.

In some cases, charter companies offer modular programs in which they will provision the boat for you or help you source a captain or a cook for your trip. This option is very helpful as it takes some stressful responsibilities off your plate, leaving you with more time to tend to more important matters.

When to Charter/Rent a Boat

The decision on whether to charter or rent a boat ultimately depends on what you want to do, how comfortable you want to be, and how long you plan to travel. If you are looking for an adventure and have enough experience to be the captain and navigate the vessel yourself, then the bareboat charter might be for you. Chartering a boat is a really fun and exciting way to experience sailing, especially if the duration of your trip is at least a week or longer. It’s like taking a cruise, but with more freedom and fun. You can go wherever you please, decide your own schedule, and not have to wait in line for anything!

If you only plan to travel a little, like for a few hours or a couple days, then renting a boat is perhaps a better option.

Charter Tips for First-Timers

Have you never tried chartering a boat before? Or perhaps you’re not comfortable with the idea of being the captain in charge of the boat? No problem! Here are a few tips to ensure everything goes smoothly.

If you need some help to plan your trip, charter companies and experienced boat owners can help you create an itinerary that suits your specific needs and wants. They can tell you where to get supplies, enjoy company, find privacy, and safely anchor. If you don’t want to drop the hook in an unfamiliar location at nighttime, you can plan a journey where, during the night, you will always be safely docked in marinas. In areas where charter boats are common, marinas usually have dock hands who will be available to help you dock, suggest some good activities in the area, and connect your boat to local water and electricity supplies.

Most charter companies are available to assist you all the time via cell phone or radio. They can answer any questions you may have and even give some helpful advice while you’re out at the sea. You can also contact their service if you run into an unexpected problem or sticky situation in the middle of your trip. When in doubt, don’t hesitate to call them for advice or assistance. After all, they want their customers to have a safe and pleasant experience at the sea.

In some cases, on your first day, you can even have a professional skipper guide you to help you familiarize yourself with the boat and its operations.

Do you have some friends who share the same love for boating as you? Send them an invite to share your charter with them. This way, you will reduce the cost of the charter and have some experienced help aboard.

When it comes to boat deliveries and chartering, there are lots of options out there. Fortunately, Trusted Yacht Delivery and Charter makes it very easy to organize your boat charter. Whether it’s about relocating a boat or a complete sailing experience with your friends – we’ve got you covered!
